A massive sinkhole has unexpectedly emerged in Surrey village Godstone, engulfing gardens and displacing about 30 families.

The sinkhole, which emerged on Monday and grew to a minimum of 20 meters by Tuesday, was categorized as a major incident by the local authorities.

The homes that were affected, constructed only three years ago on a former sand quarry, were evacuated immediately.

Resident Noosh Miri remembered the terrifying experience: “We were hammered on the door in a violent manner. When I opened it, we were in a waterfall—a sinkhole had made it to my front doorstep.” Resident Rez Mira saw his garden slipping into the hole. “The wall is going to fall for sure… we are terrified,” he told the BBC.

The Surrey County Council is investigating the cause and has asked people to avoid the area while safety work is being carried out. Authorities are providing temporary accommodation support to affected families.

Meanwhile, SES Water has confirmed there was a burst water main along Godstone High Street, but repairs have now taken place to reconnect electricity and water to the premises. The Local Resilience Forum continues to monitor the situation for an expeditious and safe resolution.
