In this day and age of uncertainty, chaos, and unplanned detours, trusting God can be a bit like walking blindfolded. But the Bible tells us that even during the darkest of times, God is working – shaping, molding, and preparing us for something more.
One of the most significant illustrations of this is the life of Joseph, a young man whose story teaches us how to trust God even when nothing seems to make sense.
1. Betrayed but Not Abandoned
The tale of Joseph begins in Genesis 37. He was adored by his father Jacob and hated by his brothers because of his dreams and his special treatment. His brothers ultimately betrayed him and sold him into slavery.
Genesis 37:28 – “So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.”
Joseph had every reason to quit on God. From a human perspective, his future was ruined. But what Joseph did not realize was that God was already working behind the scenes.
2. Faithfulness in Adversity
Joseph remained faithful even as a slave. He faithfully served in Potiphar’s house and found favor. Adversity came his way again – Joseph was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and imprisoned (Genesis 39). But he did not allow bitterness to overcome him.
Genesis 39:21 – “The Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.”
Joseph’s faith did not rest in his circumstance. His life proved that in the pit and in the prison, God is with us.
3. Promotion Comes from the Lord
Years following his tribulation, Joseph was called to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams (Genesis 41). God provided him wisdom and insight, and Pharaoh made him second-in-command of all Egypt.
Genesis 41:41 – “So Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt‘”
From prisoner to prime minister – only God can do such a turnabout. Joseph’s faith and patience were not in vain.
4. God Meant It for Good
The most moving part of Joseph’s story is probably when he reunites with his brothers. Instead of seeking revenge, he reveals a forgiving spirit and insight into God’s greater purpose.
Genesis 50:20 – “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives“
Joseph realized that all the pain, betrayal, and waiting were tools in God’s hand to fulfill a divine purpose.
Applying Joseph’s Story to Our Lives
In seasons of uncertainty – whether loss, financial crisis, family issues, or unanswered prayer – we question God’s plan and timing. But Joseph’s life shows us:
- God is always with us, even in the most difficult of circumstances
- Delay does not necessarily mean denial – God’s promises are fulfilled in His perfect timing
- Our pain can be utilized for a greater purpose that has yet to be seen by us
Romans 8:28 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Conclusion
Trusting God does not mean life is going to be easy. It means that we believe He is good, even when life is not. Like Joseph, we are called to be faithful, walk with integrity, and trust God is writing a story so much greater than we can imagine.
If you are walking through a season of unknowns today, remember – God is still in control, and His plan is unfolding, even when you cannot see it.
