From the very beginning, God’s intention was never just to create people who follow rules. He created humans for relationship, to know Him, walk with Him, and experience His presence.
In the Garden of Eden, before any commandments were broken, Adam and Eve had direct fellowship with God (Genesis 3:8). That shows us something deep: relationship existed before rules were ever an issue.
Obedience Without Relationship Is Empty
It’s possible to obey God outwardly but be far from Him inwardly. Jesus spoke strongly about this when He said:
“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” (Matthew 15:8)
God is not looking for robots. He doesn’t desire forced obedience or religious routines without connection.
You can pray, fast, and follow commandments, but if your heart isn’t connected to Him, something is missing.
Relationship Naturally Produces Obedience
Here’s the key truth:
True relationship with God leads to obedience, not out of fear, but out of love.
Jesus made this clear:
“If you love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
Notice He didn’t say, “If you fear me” or “If you want to earn my love.”
He said, “If you love me.”
That means obedience is not the starting point, it’s the result of a genuine relationship.
God Desires Intimacy With You
God wants to be known personally. He invites you into closeness:
-
To talk with Him (prayer)
-
To hear from Him (His Word)
-
To walk with Him daily
This is why Christianity is not just a religion, it’s a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Why Obedience Still Matters
Relationship doesn’t cancel obedience, it gives it meaning.
Obedience is how we:
-
Show trust in God
-
Align our lives with His will
-
Reflect His Character
But without relationship, obedience becomes legalism.
With relationship, obedience becomes love in action.
The Balance: Relationship First, Obedience naturally Follows
So the real answer is:
-
God does not want empty obedience without connection
-
God does not ignore obedience either
-
God wants a relationship that produces willing obedience
Conclusion
God is not asking, “Will you just follow my rules?”
He’s asking, “Will you walk with Me?”
And when you truly walk with Him, obedience stops feeling like a burden, and becomes a natural expression of love.
