Real Madrid star forward Kylian Mbappé has been named the UEFA Champions League Player of the Week for his breathtaking display against Manchester City. His display was world class as he dismantled one of Europe’s best teams single-handedly.
Mbappé took the fan-voted award on UEFA.com over Orkun Kökçü, Vitinha, and Noa Lang. While all the nominees played extremely well, there was never any doubt in anyone’s mind as to who was going to take home this one.
The Frenchman was a class above the rest, having played against one of the top sides and producing a performance for the ages.
His hat-trick was a masterclass, with each of the three goals showing a different aspect of his class. The first was an isolation masterclass, showing his searing speed and ball control.
The second was a clinical finish inside the box, showing his head in a cool place. And his third was a perfectly timed shot which left the goalkeeper with no choice. It was a masterclass in finishing, positioning, and footballing intelligence.
Apart from the objectives, Mbappé’s all-around contribution to the game was colossal. His movement, interchange, and space-opening up for others made Real Madrid appear to threaten the defense throughout the entire match. He was the pivot behind the victory, proving why he is arguably one of the best players in the world today.
Having earned this award for himself, Mbappé is now going to turn his attention towards the coming string of matches. Real Madrid will have to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, highly-anticipated Madrid derby expected to be an edge-of-your-seat kind of affair.
Otherwise, he is also set to prepare for high-stakes domestic fixtures like a La Liga tie against Girona and a Copa del Rey tie against Real Sociedad.
