One of the greatest gifts God provides us with is something we often take for granted — our health and wellbeing. It’s easy to overlook just how precious this gift is until sickness comes into our lives.
I’ve heard a number of people say when we’re ill, “If you have your health, you have everything.” As time went on, hearing that made me understand how much being in good health allows me to live life to the fullest. Realizing that helped me appreciate the health and vigor God has given me more.
While He was here on earth, Jesus used healing and restoration as wonderful miracles to show that He truly was the long-awaited Messiah. When John the Baptist, when imprisoned, began questioning whether Jesus was the one they were waiting for, he sent his disciples to ask.
Jesus replied by pointing to the miracles occurring around Him — the blind gaining sight, the lame walking, the deaf hearing, and the dead being raised (Matthew 11:2–4, Isaiah 35:5–6). Healing was, and is, a clear demonstration of God’s power and love.
6 Daily Blessings That Reminds Us to Give Glory to God
Let us examine six daily blessings that remind us to give glory to God with the gift of our health:
1. The Blessing of Vision
There’s something just magical about a beautiful, sunny day — the blue sky, green leaves, colorful flowers, and a gentle breeze. Sunshine can lift our spirits after days of rain like nothing else. Taking a moment to pray for God’s blessing on the simple gift of sight is a way to bless Him in very real terms.
Our eyes allow us to do so much: drive, read, watch movies, see loved ones and friends, and appreciate the beauty of the world. Even the rain, though it appears gloomy, plays a part in keeping all that beauty in motion. Being grateful for rainy and sunny days is an excellent way to thank God for the gift of sight.
2. The Blessing of Walking
It’s easy to gripe when every parking place in front of a store is full. But when we look at the fact that simply being able to walk from a distant parking lot is a blessing, perspective changes. To be able to walk on one’s own feet without assistance is something many wish for.
Walking gives us mobility and independence to engage in activities like hiking, traveling, shopping, or even a stroll in the park. Gratitude to God for healthy legs and mobility is another means by which we can glorify God on a daily basis.
3. The Blessing of a Healthy Immune System
Our immune system works around the clock, fighting colds, viruses, and germs that otherwise would make us very sick. It’s difficult to recall to be grateful for this gift until we get a reminder through sickness.
It was not so with Jesus. Epidemics like leprosy swept through towns and were fatal. Today many diseases are curable, and our bodies learn to heal themselves with a little tender loving care.
Honoring God with our health means taking care of our bodies — eating nutritious food, drinking water, exercising, and sleeping well. After all, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). A healthy immune system not only protects us but also enables us to work, serve, and live life to its fullest potential.
4. The Blessing of Hearing
A few of life’s most precious moments are through audio — a child’s first words, a loved song on the radio, a meaningful chat with a buddy, or hearing God’s Word proclaimed at church.
Our hearing connects us with the world and with the loved ones who surround us. With each hearing of music, laughter, or a silent prayer, we are reminded that we have the opportunity to thank God for hearing. It’s also in silences from His Word that we can hear Him whisper to our hearts.
5. The Blessing of Close Relationships
The longer time goes on, the more we realize how valuable close family and friends are. Life changes — friends move away, children grow up, and, worse, loved ones pass on.
Loneliness has been a top health concern in recent times, even dubbed an “epidemic” by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. Studies show loneliness has as much of a negative impact on physical health as smoking or obesity.
God created us for meaningful relationships. Taking the time to build those relationships is a way of respecting the people God has placed in our lives and respecting God Himself. Whether it’s a phone call, a cup of coffee, or simply spending unhurried time together, investing in relationships is an investment in what matters most.
6. The Blessing of Serving the Lord
In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus charges us to “go and make disciples.” It takes energy, strength, and good health to live that calling out.
Using the talents and skills God has gifted us with to bless others — whether through sharing our testimony, bringing comfort to a hurting heart, or serving practically — is one of the sweetest ways we can honor Him. Being healthy gives us the ability to function in our total capacity and bless others as we’ve been blessed.
A Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Blessing of Good Health
Dear Heavenly Father,
I thank You for the valuable gift of health and wellness. We tend to take the small things for granted — the ability to see, hear, walk, breathe easily, and love and be loved by the people that surround us. Today, I thank You that every heartbeat, every step, and every breath is Your gift from Your hand.
Lord, forgive me when I have abused these gifts or complained at slight obstructions. Guide me to honour You with my body, keeping it a temple of Your Holy Spirit. Provide me with sense to look after my health by wise choices, and self-discipline to be a good servant of the authority You have bestowed.
Thank You for the beauty that I can behold, the words and music that I can hear, and the relationships that make my life fuller. Thank You for my immune system that protects me, and for the strength that allows me to serve others and do what You have called me to do.
Teach me, Lord, to use my health not just for myself, but to glorify You. Make known to me every day the mercies which are around me, and fill my heart with gratitude even in times of weakness or illness, because I know that You are still engaged.
Let me live out each day in Your passion — yielding to You my body, mind, and spirit as a living sacrifice, pleasing to You and set apart to do Your work.
