Kingdom of Righteousness 4 Ever

Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Luke 9:16-17

The idea of mermaids – half human, half fish – has fascinated people for centuries. They appear in ancient folklore, sailors’ stories, movies, and modern pop culture.

But from a biblical and Christian perspective, an important question arises: Did God actually create mermaids?

What the Bible Says About Creation

The Bible is very specific about God’s creation. In Genesis 1, Scripture tells us that God created:

  • Humans (male and female)

  • Animals of the land

  • Birds of the air

  • Creatures of the sea

However, nowhere in the Bible are mermaids, or any half-human, half-animal beings mentioned.

When God created humans, He made them fully human, in His image (Genesis 1:26–27). Sea creatures, on the other hand, were created according to their own kind.

The Bible consistently shows that God created living beings with clear distinctions, not hybrids.

What About Strange Creatures in the Bible?

Some people point to mysterious creatures like Nephilim (Genesis 6) or symbolic beings in prophetic books and say mermaids could fall into a similar category.

But even these beings are either explained as humans, angels, or symbolic visions, not biological sea-human creatures.

Biblical symbolism is meant to convey spiritual truths, not hidden species living in the oceans.

Where Did Mermaid Stories Come From?

Most historians believe mermaid legends came from:

  • Sailors mistaking sea animals (like manatees or dugongs) for human-like figures

  • Ancient myths from cultures such as Greek, Assyrian, and Babylonian civilizations

  • Human imagination, storytelling, and exaggeration over time

These cultures often mixed fantasy with religion, unlike the Bible, which separates myth from divine truth.

Could Mermaids Exist Outside the Bible?

From a Christian standpoint, if mermaids truly existed as intelligent beings, Scripture would likely acknowledge them, especially since the Bible addresses creation, humanity, and salvation.

The absence of any mention strongly suggests they are mythical, not part of God’s created order.

A Christian Perspective

Christian faith teaches that God is a God of order and purpose. Humans are uniquely created in His image, and animals are created according to their kinds.

Mermaids blur this God-given distinction. While mermaids make for entertaining stories and art, there is no biblical or scientific evidence that God created them.

Conclusion

According to the Bible, God did not create mermaids. They belong to folklore, mythology, and imagination, not Scripture.

While it’s fine to enjoy fantasy stories, Christians are encouraged to ground their beliefs in God’s Word rather than myths.

As Colossians 2:8 reminds us, we should not be carried away by human traditions that are not rooted in Christ.
