Commonwealth Contributions Highlighted
This recruitment phase recognizes the valuable contributions of Commonwealth soldiers into the British Army.
Eligibility and Application Requirements

Medical Screening and Recruitment Process
Medical screening includes testing for Sickle Cell traits, prevalent in many Commonwealth populations.
- Sickle Cell Trait: The condition does not bar the applicant from selection but makes an individual high risk, thus diagnostic blood tests are necessary prior to the assessment of fitness. This is done for the safety of all recruits.
Eligibility Criteria
Soldiers
- Minimum Age: 16 years (applications can start at 15 years and 7 months; assessments begin at 15 years and 9 months).
- Training: Applicants under 17 years and 6 months will undergo the Army Foundation College prior to starting regular training.
- Maximum Age: Must enlist prior to 36 years.
Officers
- Age Range: 18-29 years – older candidates can be recruited for particular professions – primarily medical professionals.
Academic Qualifications:
- 35 ALIS points from 7 subjects, English, Maths and Science/Foreign Language minimum C/4.
- 72 UCAS Tariff points from 3 A levels
Fitness and Lifestyle Standards
The applicant is supposed to succeed in a couple of physical examinations, for example,
- Beep Test
- Seated Ball Throw
- Mid Thigh Pull
Health Recommendations:
- Follow a proper diet and maintain a healthy BMI.
- Avoid smoking to enhance the level of fitness.
Personal Appearance and Conduct
- Tattoos: Allowed but not obscene or offensive. Tattoos on hands and neck are acceptable; head and face are not.
- Piercings: Some modifications, like large flesh tunnels, will make an applicant ineligible.
Criminal Records and Integrity
- The British Army is honest. All applicants should declare any unspent criminal convictions. Failure to do so may result in prosecution.
