Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has confirmed that he is close to making a big decision about his future as his contract with the Reds is running out.
The Dutch centre-back is already seventh among the 20 most valuable players who will be free agents this summer, and he’s not the only one. Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also out of contract, so Liverpool are in danger of losing three of their top stars in one window.
While Trent is the one most likely to leave based on fans and sources, Van Dijk and Salah also are headed overseas. Both of these superstars are said to make moves to other top European teams or have a future with the Saudi Pro League.
Of course, Liverpool would be keen to retain all three, particularly with their value to Arne Slot’s team this season. The Reds are 12 points ahead at the top of the Premier League with nine fixtures remaining, having endured a difficult week where they were eliminated from the Champions League and the Carabao Cup.
Speaking after their 2-1 loss to Newcastle at Wembley, Van Dijk urged his teammates to refocus on winning the Premier League title.
“We have to turn this around,” he said. “That’s football—one moment everything’s great, the next it’s all doom and gloom. But we’ve still got nine league games left, and we’re fighting for the biggest prize of all.”
Nobody thought we would be here, fighting for the title. It’s the hardest one to win, but we have a lot to anticipate. Now it’s all about hard work and coming back prepared for Everton after the break,” said Van Dijk
Regarding his contract status, Van Dijk assured fans that news will be coming soon: “There’s going to be news before the end of the season. I’m fully committed, I love the club—that’s what matters most.”
