Backend Software Engineer – Python/Postgres
Enveritas, a mission-driven nonprofit and Y Combinator-backed organization, is looking for an experienced Backend Software Engineer to join its Engineering & Data Group.
This is a full-time, remote/global position focused primarily on Python, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, geospatial data, and backend systems supporting Enveritas’ EUDR engineering initiatives.
Enveritas develops technology that helps improve the livelihoods of millions of smallholder coffee farmers around the world.
The organization uses large-scale data collection, satellite imagery, geospatial analysis, and software systems to understand farming conditions and provide insights that can improve the social, economic, and environmental sustainability of coffee production.
About the Engineering & Data Team
The Engineering & Data Group consists of approximately 30 professionals working across a range of technical and analytical disciplines.
The team develops systems used to collect, process, analyze, and report information about coffee farms and farming practices.
Its technology supports operations ranging from identifying coffee farms through satellite imagery and coordinating surveys across different countries to detecting data anomalies while field teams are still collecting information.
The backend technology stack includes Python, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, AWS, Docker, GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, and Terraform.
What You’ll Do
As part of the EUDR engineering team, you will develop and maintain backend systems responsible for processing customer-submitted farm information, validating and transforming data, and integrating that information with geospatial datasets and deforestation-detection models.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing, improving, and maintaining backend services supporting Enveritas’ EUDR systems.
- Building and refining geospatial data-processing workflows.
- Strengthening data validation, error handling, and system reliability.
- Investigating technical issues by analyzing system behavior, data, and underlying assumptions.
- Working closely with support and operational teams to identify and resolve problems.
- Translating evolving or sometimes incomplete requirements into practical engineering solutions.
- Updating systems in response to new EU regulatory guidance and EUDR requirements.
- Developing backend applications using Python and PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
- Improving system monitoring, observability, and resilience.
- Contributing to CI/CD processes and infrastructure improvements.
- Applying and maintaining Terraform-based infrastructure changes within AWS.
Who They’re Looking For
Enveritas operates as a fully distributed organization, so candidates should be comfortable working independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with colleagues across different countries.
This is a full-time individual contributor position. Candidates may be located in countries supported by Enveritas’ Employer of Record provider, Deel.
The team’s core collaboration hours are 10:00 AM–2:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, with employees having flexibility to structure the remainder of their working hours around that period.
The ideal candidate will be motivated by Enveritas’ mission of improving conditions for smallholder coffee farmers and have an interest in sustainability. You should also be comfortable working in environments where operational requirements can evolve quickly and where solving a problem may first require investigating and defining it.
Because Enveritas operates with relatively small teams, engineers are expected to work independently when necessary while producing clean, understandable, and maintainable code that teammates can easily work with.
Occasional opportunities for international travel may also be available, allowing team members to meet colleagues and potentially visit regions where Enveritas operates.
Salary & Benefits
For candidates hired in the United States, the base salary is:
$135,000–$155,000 per year
The position is full-time and exempt, with salary paid semi-monthly.

For candidates hired outside the United States, compensation will be competitive and adjusted according to the candidate’s location, applicable employment laws, and regional requirements. Compensation will be paid in the appropriate local currency, and benefits may vary by country.
Interview Process
Enveritas follows a structured and transparent recruitment process. After the initial introductory interview, candidates should expect the complete interview process to take approximately 4–6 weeks.
The process generally includes four conversations totaling approximately five hours, with candidates advised to allow additional time for interview preparation.
Requirements
The ideal candidate should have:
- At least 7 years of full-time professional experience as a backend software engineer.
- Extensive professional experience developing applications and complex data-processing systems with Python.
- Familiarity with Python frameworks such as Django or Flask.
- Advanced experience with PostgreSQL, including joins, query optimization, stored procedures, and performance tuning.
- Experience designing modular, efficient, and maintainable software systems.
- Strong knowledge of software architecture and the ability to help others solve architectural challenges.
- Practical experience working with Linux and Bash scripting.
- Experience using Docker containers.
- Hands-on experience with AWS technologies, including EC2, RDS, and CloudFront.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical colleagues.
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent education or training in software engineering principles.
