The client is an established character-focused comedy brand built around a playful universe of plush animal characters, each with distinct personalities, relationships, and stories.

The brand’s humor blends cute, chaotic, relatable, and slightly unpredictable comedy aimed primarily at adults.

Content explores everyday experiences such as anxiety, friendships, questionable decisions, relationships, adult responsibilities, low social energy, small wins, and the general absurdity of everyday life.

About the Role

The Comedy Writer will help grow this existing character universe by developing creative ideas for comics, memes, social media content, short-form animation, and other character-driven storytelling.

Rather than focusing heavily on long-form scripts, this position is centered on creative ideation and concept development.

You will become familiar with the personalities and relationships of the brand’s characters and use that understanding to develop funny situations, interactions, recurring jokes, and engaging social concepts.

You will also turn successful ideas into clear creative briefs that illustrators and other members of the creative team can easily execute.

Work Arrangement: Fully Remote / Work From Home
Working Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM EST
Eligible Regions: Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe

Key Responsibilities

Comedy & Character Development

Generate a consistent flow of original comedy concepts based on the personalities and relationships of the brand’s existing characters.

Develop humorous situations, character interactions, recurring jokes, comic ideas, and social media hooks that fit naturally within the established character universe.

Build a strong understanding of each character so that their actions, dialogue, and interactions remain authentic and recognizable.

Maintain a steady pipeline of creative ideas and content from week to week.

Multi-Format Content Creation

Develop creative concepts for a variety of formats, including:

  • Comics
  • Memes
  • Stickers and GIFs
  • Short-form videos
  • Static social media posts

Adapt ideas appropriately for different platforms and formats, understanding that a joke may need to be presented differently as a TikTok, Reel, comic, meme, or static post.

Create concepts where visual elements and written copy work together effectively to deliver the humor.

Creative Brief Development

Transform comedy ideas and character concepts into straightforward creative briefs that illustrators can easily understand and execute.

Clearly communicate the intended joke, situation, character interaction, and visual direction to members of the creative team.

Team Collaboration

Work closely with the wider creative team through project management platforms, regular communication, and scheduled check-ins.

Qualifications

Previous experience writing for a character, mascot, entertainment, or comedy-focused brand is an advantage but is not mandatory.

Experience or a strong interest in animation, comics, internet culture, character brands, or toy culture is also beneficial.

Candidates from different professional backgrounds and experience levels are welcome, including junior and senior creatives, self-taught writers, and formally trained professionals.

The selection process will place greater emphasis on comedic ability, creativity, and the quality of the test submission than on résumé credentials alone.

Skills & Abilities

Candidates should have a strong understanding of current U.S. humor, social media trends, and internet culture, with the ability to create comedy that feels natural and conversational rather than overly scripted.

You should also demonstrate:

  • Strong instincts for character-driven comedy.
  • An understanding of how a character’s established personality can drive humor.
  • The ability to combine visual storytelling and written copy effectively.
  • Strong creative briefing skills for working with illustrators.
  • The ability to generate numerous ideas and identify the strongest concepts.
  • Flexibility in adapting comedy across comics, memes, videos, GIFs, stickers, and static social posts.
  • The ability to consistently produce fresh ideas without overworking individual concepts.

What Success Looks Like

A successful Comedy Writer will quickly develop a strong understanding of the brand’s characters, personalities, relationships, and established world.

You will consistently produce fresh character-driven comedy concepts that feel authentic to the brand and believable for each character.

You will also be expected to maintain a reliable flow of content ideas, successfully adapt concepts for different visual and social formats, and provide clear creative briefs that enable illustrators to turn those ideas into finished content.

Ultimately, your work should feel naturally connected to the brand’s existing character universe while helping expand it in new and entertaining ways.

The Opportunity
