LiveKit develops infrastructure for the rapidly growing world of voice-powered computing.

Its platform provides developers with the tools needed to create, test, launch, scale, monitor, and manage voice and AI agents in production environments.

Founded in 2021, LiveKit has become part of the technology stack behind voice AI experiences used by companies and platforms such as OpenAI, xAI, Salesforce, Coursera, Spotify, and thousands of other organizations.

Collectively, applications built using LiveKit support billions of calls each year.

About the Role

LiveKit is looking for a Design Engineer who can combine exceptional front-end engineering with a strong understanding of visual design, motion, interaction, and web performance.

This isn’t a traditional front-end position where you’ll simply receive a finished design, convert it into code, and move on to the next task.

LiveKit is introducing a new brand identity and needs someone capable of transforming that identity into a complete digital experience.

You’ll help create the components, animation systems, interactions, and development tools that bring the brand to life across the web. The goal is to build experiences that don’t simply match static designs, but feel polished, responsive, engaging, and alive.

This role is particularly suited to someone who cares deeply about the small details of web experiences—from smooth animation and carefully tuned transitions to loading speed and overall responsiveness.

You’ll be a strong fit if you enjoy writing code that is efficient, dependable, and appropriate for the problem at hand. You should be comfortable solving challenging technical problems, working independently, learning new technologies quickly, and turning ambitious ideas into production-ready experiences.

LiveKit also values engineers who can communicate complicated technical concepts clearly and collaborate effectively with people from both technical and creative backgrounds.

Contributing thoughtful issues or pull requests to LiveKit’s GitHub repositories is another great way to demonstrate your technical abilities and understanding of the product.

Who You Are

You’re an accomplished front-end engineer with a strong portfolio of real-world web projects that demonstrates both technical ability and attention to visual quality.

You care deeply about details such as animation timing, transitions, interactions, responsiveness, and page performance. These aren’t finishing touches to you—they’re fundamental parts of creating an excellent digital experience.

You’re comfortable interpreting brand and design direction and transforming those ideas into scalable components and reusable systems.

You can work quickly and independently, making sensible decisions and delivering polished results even when every detail hasn’t been defined in advance.

You’re also comfortable working closely with designers and enjoy finding technical solutions that strengthen creative ideas rather than reducing them to whatever is easiest to implement.

Experience

Previous experience working for a developer-tools, API, infrastructure, or similarly technical company would be valuable, particularly if you understand how to communicate products effectively to highly technical audiences.

Experience with WebGL, shaders, creative coding, or other advanced browser technologies would also be useful for building distinctive interactive experiences.

Contributions to design systems—including reusable primitives, design tokens, components, documentation, or developer tooling—would be an advantage.

Experience optimizing complex, visually rich websites to meet Core Web Vitals and other performance standards is also highly desirable.

And if you’re the type of person who saves screen recordings of interesting website animations and interactions simply to understand how they were built, you’ll probably feel at home in this role.

What LiveKit Offers

LiveKit provides the opportunity to work on technology with significant real-world impact while contributing alongside highly skilled engineers in an open-source environment.

The position includes a competitive salary and equity package, along with health, dental, and vision benefits.

You’ll also have access to a flexible vacation policy and the opportunity to contribute directly to products and infrastructure shaping the future of voice-powered applications.

Requirements

You'll take significant ownership of the experience and technical quality of LiveKit's website, helping establish a higher standard for what a developer-focused website can achieve through motion, interaction, design, and performance.

You'll translate LiveKit's evolving brand identity into reusable digital systems, including components, animation patterns, design primitives, and internal tooling that allow teams to produce consistent, high-quality experiences efficiently.

You'll create and improve product pages, campaign experiences, launch pages, and other important web surfaces while maintaining a consistently high level of design and engineering quality.

Performance will be treated as an essential part of the product experience. You'll build visually rich and interactive experiences while ensuring pages remain responsive, efficient, and measurable against clearly defined performance targets.

You'll also collaborate closely with brand designers, marketers, and other design engineers, helping turn creative concepts into polished web experiences that can be shipped to users.
