Frontend Engineer at Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform that helps businesses manage payments, increase revenue, and unlock new growth opportunities.
Millions of companies, from global enterprises to ambitious startups, rely on Stripe to power their businesses.
Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet by making the global economy more accessible to everyone. Joining Stripe means contributing to meaningful work that helps shape the future of the internet economy.
About the Team
The Web Presence and Platform (WPP) team is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining Stripe’s public-facing websites, including stripe.com and other digital platforms that introduce customers to the company.
The team creates engaging, high-quality experiences that communicate the capabilities of Stripe’s products, showcase its expertise, and encourage adoption.
Beyond the websites themselves, WPP develops the underlying systems and infrastructure that ensure these platforms remain fast, reliable, scalable, and easy to maintain.
Its work combines design, engineering, operations, and business strategy to deliver effective digital experiences while creating tools and resources that benefit teams across Stripe.
What You’ll Do
Within WPP, the Design Systems pod develops and maintains Helm, the shared design system that powers stripe.com. The team builds reusable components, design patterns, tools, and guidelines that enable other teams to create consistent, accessible, and visually engaging web experiences at scale.
As a Design Systems Engineer, you will translate Stripe’s visual identity into reusable, production-ready frontend solutions.
You will contribute throughout the development process, from initial design concepts and implementation to testing, documentation, adoption, and continuous improvement.
Working closely with designers and engineers, you will ensure Helm supports responsive layouts, interactive experiences, accessibility standards, performance requirements, content structures, and multiple languages.
You will also collaborate with teams using the system, helping them identify reusable solutions, apply existing components effectively, and contribute valuable improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop polished, accessible, and high-performance React components and design patterns that reflect Stripe’s visual identity across its public websites.
- Collaborate with designers and engineers to define component functionality, APIs, responsive behavior, interaction details, and design-token structures.
- Maintain strong alignment between design specifications and production code through documentation, accessibility checks, visual regression testing, production reviews, and quality assurance.
- Guide teams on whether to use existing components, extend the design system, or develop independent solutions, while ensuring reusable improvements are incorporated into Helm.
- Improve how designers, developers, content creators, and AI agents discover, understand, and implement Helm through effective documentation, examples, tools, and ongoing support.
Who You Are
Stripe is looking for candidates who meet the essential qualifications for this position. Meeting the minimum requirements is sufficient to apply, while the preferred qualifications provide additional advantages.
Minimum Requirements
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in frontend development or design engineering, building production-ready web applications or the shared systems and tools that support them.
- Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining production design systems or shared component libraries and improving them through practical implementation.
- Strong proficiency in React, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS, with experience transforming designs into responsive, interactive production experiences.
- Experience regularly using AI-assisted development tools in software engineering, with the ability to review and validate generated outputs while maintaining code quality, security, and product standards.
- Ability to design flexible component APIs, foundational elements, design tokens, and composition models that offer developers flexibility without compromising accessibility or maintainability.
- Strong visual design and interaction judgment, alongside excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with experienced designers and engineers on complex technical and design decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience creating visually distinctive, brand-focused web experiences while maintaining consistency across different design directions.
- Familiarity with content management systems, structured content, localization, and the technical requirements of maintaining large-scale international websites.
- Experience with design-to-development tools and workflows, including Figma libraries, design tokens, Code Connect, component documentation, and visual regression testing.
- Experience transitioning teams between design systems or upgrading shared components while maintaining compatibility with existing production websites and applications.
