garden3d is a worker-owned creative collective working across design, technology, community, media, and product development.

The group builds everything from digital brands and community spaces to connected devices, software products, and experimental media.

Its client and partner network includes organizations such as Google, Stripe, Figma, Hinge, ACLU, Mozilla, MIT, Etsy, Gagosian, The Nobel Prize, and others. garden3d also contributes to products and ventures including The Light Phone, Mill, and Index Space.

The collective operates through several distinct brands and initiatives, including:

  • Sanctuary Computer — software development and digital product engineering.
  • XXIX — design and creative practice.
  • Index Space — a global network of physical community spaces.
  • USB Club — digital community initiatives.
  • garden3d TK — an experimental media venture exploring technology, design, and culture.

garden3d is built around transparency, shared ownership, creative independence, and long-term collaboration. The company works in a distributed, remote-friendly way and values thoughtful communication, autonomy, and high creative standards.

Position Overview

garden3d is hiring a Head of Marketing & Communications to lead how the collective presents itself across the internet.

The core responsibility is simple: ensure that everything garden3d publishes is compelling, distinctive, and produced to an exceptionally high standard.

This person will oversee marketing and communications across garden3d’s house of brands, helping each business maintain its own voice, audience, and content rhythm while ensuring the wider garden3d story remains coherent.

You will work closely with the founder and president, studio leads, designers, developers, editors, animators, photographers, community managers, event producers, freelancers, and media partners.

The role is highly cross-functional and requires someone who can move comfortably between very different workstreams, identify the strongest stories, and turn them into content that people genuinely want to engage with.

This position can be performed from anywhere in the world. Although much of the company’s activity is centered around New York, garden3d is already distributed across time zones and is open to candidates based in locations such as Europe, Singapore, Chicago, or elsewhere.

Core Responsibilities

Brand & Content Leadership

  • Own the overall marketing and communications strategy across garden3d and its individual brands.
  • Maintain a consistently high creative standard across social posts, videos, essays, podcasts, campaigns, and editorial work.
  • Ensure each brand retains its own distinct voice while contributing to a unified garden3d narrative.
  • Decide which stories are worth telling, where they should appear, and how they should be produced.

Social Media & Short-Form Content

  • Develop content that captures attention across platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube Shorts, and other relevant channels.
  • Maintain a current understanding of platform behavior, content formats, hooks, and audience expectations.
  • Treat short-form video as a core creative discipline rather than a secondary marketing format.
  • Adapt messaging and creative execution to suit the strengths of each platform.

Case Studies & Client Storytelling

  • Lead the production of compelling case studies for client projects across garden3d’s creative studios.
  • Interview project teams, shape narratives, and art-direct supporting visual assets.
  • Turn completed work into stories that strengthen credibility and help generate future business.

Website & Brand Presence

  • Own the strategic direction of garden3d’s websites and digital presence.
  • Ensure each site clearly communicates the work, capabilities, and identity of the relevant studio.
  • Keep websites, decks, presentations, and business-development materials up to date.
  • Ensure all public-facing materials accurately reflect the quality of the work being produced.

Editorial & Media Ownership

  • Manage editorial channels including the garden3d Substack, podcast, and transparency publications.
  • Own editorial calendars, publishing standards, audience growth, and content development.
  • Capture stories emerging from Index Space, USB Club, and garden3d’s wider creative community.
  • Develop media properties that can grow beyond traditional agency marketing.

Production & Distribution

  • Direct producers, designers, editors, animators, and freelancers across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Create clear briefs, manage timelines, and maintain production quality across workstreams.
  • Oversee paid social campaigns across Meta, Instagram, and other relevant platforms.
  • Manage audience targeting, budgets, creative testing, and campaign performance.

Analytics & ROI

  • Measure content performance across audience growth, engagement, lead generation, and pipeline influence.
  • Evaluate both paid and organic marketing efforts based on measurable outcomes.
  • Use performance data to shape future content and marketing priorities.
  • Provide clear reporting on what is working, what is not, and where resources should be focused.

Events & IRL Presence

  • Determine which conferences, events, talks, launches, openings, and community gatherings are strategically valuable.
  • Ensure garden3d presents itself consistently and authentically at in-person events.
  • Turn physical events and community moments into content with lasting value.

Culture & Creative Leadership

  • Model garden3d’s values of curiosity, partnership, accountability, and transparency.
  • Provide clear, constructive feedback that improves work without micromanaging creative teams.
  • Help producers and creatives deliver some of the strongest work of their careers.
  • Build a creative environment where quality, trust, and shared responsibility are taken seriously.

Special Projects

The Head of Marketing & Communications may also help lead initiatives such as:

  • Developing garden3d TK into a full experimental media brand covering books, music, screenplays, shows, and other formats.
  • Growing the garden3d podcast into an independent media property.
  • Launching campaigns for new Index locations, USB Club releases, and community programs.
  • Turning garden3d’s annual open-source P&L publication into a major media event.
  • Building a small internal content studio supporting multiple business-development pipelines.
  • Creating systems and teams that allow garden3d to publish more frequently without compromising quality.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in marketing, brand, content, communications, or a related leadership role.
  • Strong experience within creative studios, agencies, founder-led companies, or similarly dynamic environments.
  • A portfolio demonstrating exceptional judgment in visual identity, storytelling, tone, and content quality.
  • Strong design understanding and the ability to create or refine visual assets in Figma when necessary.
  • Experience managing a company’s web presence, including messaging, site strategy, and capability materials.
  • Excellent project-management skills across complex production schedules and multiple concurrent workstreams.
  • Practical experience producing short-form video for platforms such as TikTok, Reels, and Shorts.
  • Demonstrated experience managing designers, editors, animators, freelancers, producers, and other creative contributors.
  • Hands-on experience running paid social campaigns, including audience development, budget ownership, and creative testing.
  • Strong understanding of the PESO model — Paid, Earned, Shared, and Owned media.

Preferred Experience

Experience in any of the following areas would be valuable:

  • Events, conferences, talks, and experiential marketing.
  • Podcast or audio production.
  • Managing communications across multiple brands.
  • Newsletter growth, especially Substack.
  • Community marketing and event programming.
  • Photography, motion design, video editing, or animation.
  • AI-assisted production tools.
  • PR and media relationships.
  • Marketing to design and engineering decision-makers.
  • Book publishing or long-form media.
  • Expanding a services-business brand into a larger consumer-facing audience.

Who They’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is collaborative, calm, self-directed, and comfortable working in a transparent, non-hierarchical environment.

They care deeply about quality but do not create unnecessary friction. They know how to manage their own workflow, guide teams effectively, and maintain high standards without slowing production down.

They should also be comfortable with alternative organizational structures, shared ownership, decentralized teams, and high levels of autonomy.
