Monitoring, Evaluation & Data Collection Officer
Notify Health is a nonprofit startup working to ensure that children across Nigeria receive essential, life-saving vaccinations on time.
A significant number of missed childhood vaccinations occur because caregivers forget their appointments or are unaware that they need to return to a health facility.
Notify Health addresses this challenge by sending timely SMS messages and automated voice-call reminders in more than 10 Nigerian languages.
Since launching approximately two and a half years ago, Notify Health has delivered immunization reminders to caregivers of more than 50,000 children across three Nigerian states.
The organization works with local partners to collect essential information, including a child’s name, date of birth, and caregiver’s phone number.
This information is then used to deliver targeted vaccination reminders through a mass-messaging system.
Early results have been encouraging. During the organization’s pilot program, timely vaccination coverage was reported to be as much as 24 percentage points higher among children whose caregivers received reminders.
With support from GiveWell and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Notify Health is expanding its operations and aims to reach at least 10 Nigerian states in the coming years.
About the MEL Officer Role
Notify Health is seeking a Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Officer to strengthen the quality, accuracy, and reliability of data supporting its vaccination reminder programs.
This is a hands-on position focused heavily on routine data monitoring, auditing, cleaning, analysis, reporting, and quality assurance.
You will regularly review information submitted by health workers and partner teams, assess its quality, correct or flag errors, determine which records can be used, and provide constructive feedback to improve future data collection.
The MEL Officer will also help identify weaknesses or inefficiencies within existing data processes and recommend practical improvements, including better workflows, automation, and improved templates.
This opportunity is particularly suited to someone with several years of monitoring and evaluation experience who enjoys detailed data work, is comfortable using technology, and wants to apply their skills toward improving children’s health.
Key Responsibilities
MEL System Execution – 60%
Review data submitted by health workers and field teams and provide clear feedback to improve record keeping and the quality of submitted photographs.
Conduct ongoing audits of program and project implementation while preparing useful reports, observations, and recommendations.
Support program evaluations through data processing, cleaning, quality assurance, and analysis.
Data Digitization & Quality Control – 20%
Review photographs of health records and determine which records are suitable for data entry and which should be excluded.
Coordinate data digitization activities and ensure data-entry staff meet required timelines and quality standards.
Troubleshoot problems that arise during the digitization process.
Review completed data entries for errors before caregivers are enrolled in vaccination reminder programs.
Investigate discrepancies between records, determine their likely causes, and provide appropriate feedback to the data-entry team.
Process Improvement, Training & Learning – 20%
Attend important training sessions and train team members on SurveyCTO data collection and data-entry processes using established forms and templates.
Share monitoring, evaluation, and learning insights during regular program meetings in implementation states.
Identify and implement opportunities to improve M&E operations through better processes, automation, templates, and other efficiency improvements.
Who They’re Looking For
The ideal candidate is analytical, dependable, highly detail-oriented, and comfortable working with large volumes of routine data without sacrificing accuracy.
You should be able to quickly identify unusual or incorrect information within datasets, investigate potential problems, and communicate issues clearly.
The position is well suited to someone who enjoys improving systems rather than simply following existing processes.
You should also be comfortable working in a startup environment where priorities can evolve as new evidence becomes available.
Essential Requirements
Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant discipline such as Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Development Economics, Computer Science, or Business Administration.
Candidates should have at least 3 years of practical experience in Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, program analytics, or another data-focused position within health or development programs.
Strong spreadsheet skills are required, particularly experience using Google Sheets for data management, reporting, and analysis.
Candidates should demonstrate excellent attention to detail and the ability to perform repetitive data-processing activities while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Strong written and spoken English communication skills are required, along with fluency in Nigerian Pidgin.
Applicants must also be comfortable working remotely and have access to a reliable internet connection and a laptop or desktop computer.
A strong commitment to accurate, transparent, and evidence-based use of data is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience using digital data-collection platforms such as SurveyCTO, ODK, or KoboToolbox would be advantageous.
Previous experience training others to use data tools is also desirable.
Knowledge of additional Nigerian languages, particularly Ebira, Tiv, or Fulfulde, would be beneficial.
Experience working within Nigeria’s healthcare system, particularly with civil society organizations, healthcare workers, or facility-level health data, is preferred.
Previous immunization-program experience would be an additional advantage.
Knowledge of data-analysis and automation technologies such as SQL, Google Data Studio, or Google Apps Script is also beneficial.
