Motion Designer at OpenAI
OpenAI was founded on an ambitious idea rather than the traditional business model: that artificial intelligence should be developed in ways that benefit everyone.
The creative team’s mission is to make the work behind this vision accessible and understandable as it moves beyond the research environment and reaches people around the world.
Working at the forefront of artificial intelligence means exploring constantly evolving ideas, emerging technologies, and possibilities that are still taking shape.
The creative team plays an important role in communicating this journey through compelling campaigns, product launches, films, brand experiences, and other innovative formats.
The goal is to transform complex ideas into meaningful stories that connect with people. This requires creativity, curiosity, and the ability to bring clarity and a human perspective to unfamiliar subjects.
This is an opportunity for creative professionals who want to help shape the visual identity and storytelling of a rapidly evolving industry.
About the Role
OpenAI is looking for a talented Motion Designer to bring its research and technological innovations to life through engaging visual storytelling.
In this role, you will translate complex research concepts, emerging AI capabilities, and scientific developments into clear, visually compelling motion content.
As part of the creative team, you will collaborate with Research, Brand, and Production teams, contributing to projects from initial concepts through final production.
You will explore creative directions, develop visual narratives, and determine the most effective ways to communicate sophisticated ideas through animation and motion design.
This is a hands-on creative position for someone with excellent animation skills, strong visual judgment, and a genuine interest in learning about new technologies.
You will help shape how OpenAI communicates its research through original motion work, reusable creative assets, and innovative production approaches.
Key Responsibilities

- Create high-quality 2D and 3D animations for research films, product launches, demonstrations, and other communication materials.
- Maintain and expand OpenAI’s visual identity and motion design language while adapting creative approaches to suit individual projects.
- Manage the complete motion design process, including visual exploration, storyboarding, animatics, animation, compositing, and final production.
- Work closely with designers, filmmakers, editors, producers, and researchers, contributing motion design expertise from the early stages of creative development.
- Transform technical, scientific, and abstract concepts into engaging visual stories that are easy for diverse audiences to understand without compromising accuracy.
- Collaborate with producers to establish project requirements, identify dependencies, manage timelines, and maintain high production standards as priorities evolve.
- Present creative concepts and completed work effectively, communicate design decisions, and incorporate feedback from both creative and technical stakeholders.
- Build reusable design assets, templates, and production workflows that improve consistency, efficiency, and the quality of recurring projects.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will bring the following experience and capabilities:
- At least 7 years of professional experience in motion design, particularly across films, advertising campaigns, product launches, or other storytelling projects.
- A strong portfolio showcasing creative direction, animation expertise, visual design judgment, and the ability to develop concepts into polished final productions.

- Advanced proficiency in Adobe After Effects, with practical experience using Cinema 4D or similar 3D animation software.
- Familiarity with video editing, compositing, and related production workflows.
- Working knowledge of Figma and experience collaborating across creative, design, and production teams.
- Excellent understanding of typography, composition, animation timing, visual rhythm, and storytelling principles.
- Demonstrated ability to make complex or unfamiliar subjects understandable through motion graphics and visual communication.
